Wheelchair lap, waist and chest straps

These are adjustable belts or straps which pass around the user's lap or waist and the back of the wheelchair. Chest belts are generally padded and attach to the wheelchair frame. They have various types of buckle which may fasten at the front or rear of the wheelchair. Their purpose is purely for safety. They are not intended to provide postural support and should never be used for restraint. Belts and straps may be fitted at the manufacturing stage, however if attached by the user it is essential that such devices are fitted and used correctly. In all cases the device must be regularly checked and maintained and the appropriateness reviewed as part of the planned preventative maintenance programme for the wheelchair or seating system. Failure to do so may result in serious injury.
