Medication reminder apps

These apps can be downloaded to compatible smart phones and are designed to give a reminder when your medication is due. You, or someone you know have to set the dosage times, and names of the medication before the reminders will work. Some give an audible reminder, others just a visual reminder when you check the screen.

Check the app is compatible with your phone / device and the operating system you have installed before download / purchase.

These apps may provide an alternative to a pill reminding device but you should take into account the limitations of relying on a mobile app. The following issues may prevent the app providing alerts at the correct time:

  • Hardware and network access limitations / having no signal
  • Putting a phone on SILENT
  • Conflict with other software/apps, task killers or upgrades to the operating systems
  • Your phone's battery running out
  • Not having your phone with you

Consequently you must not rely on an app alone to remember to take your prescriptions. If you find it difficult to remember to take your medication or find yourself taking repeat doses you should consult with a healthcare professional. Follow your doctor's instructions and only take drugs as advised by your pharmacy.

These apps may be updated periodically, users should independently check for new version of these application as there may be important bug fixes.

When downloading an app use only well-known app download markets. They significantly reduces the likelihood of downloading an app malware/virus. If you're interested in downloading a particular app, run an online search on its name (using a search engine) first to see what others say about it or to check for malware reports. Note that Apple retains full control over Apple apps and the way they actually run on its devices and vets each one before making them available at its App Store.
